Dude, Where’s My Car? Dir. Danny Leiner
Am I getting lackadaisical in my old age or are stupid movies somehow funnier? I remember the last “stupid movie” I went to see, Biodome, was actually quite horrible and embarrassing, although those feelings could have partly been a result of the immense amount of candy I consumed in the theater.
But Dude, Where’s My Car? has more attractive actors than Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin and does seem to be mocking itself and having fun doing so. It doesn’t seem like anyone in the movie would just as soon be subjected to a sigmoidoscopy as collect their salaries. Dude has a goofy lightheartedness to that makes me think it isn’t merely a hack job. Even the significant plot holes didn’t bother me enough to even mention them here (or remember themhow scary is that?) In fact, there was a certain level of self-reflexivity that I found clever. Now I am really scared for myself. But it reminded me a lot of Spirit of ’76, another un-stupid stupid movie. And I really want to see it again. Dude, where’s my integrity?
